Number 38 in the series “God Rocks: 101 Amazing Everyday Gifts!” Stories and promises of Jesus that show us the awesome blessings we can experience each day. I hope it encourages you!
I love this story of Jesus because it touches so many levels of hurting all of us experience.
A woman had a physical disease that caused her menstrual flow to continue for 12 years. In addition to the pain and exhaustion she was also an outcast. Anyone she touched became ceremonially unclean so she could have no contact with those she loved.
She also spent her life savings going to doctors only nothing worked and some of the side effects left her even worse.
I think we all can relate. We have a problem that’s gone on for a long time with little solution in sight.
We may feel isolated from those we love because they’re worn out from it also. And frustrated we can’t go and do the things we enjoy.
Jesus walked through her village in a crowd teaching and healing.
She thought, “If I can just touch the hem of his robe I’ll be healed. I’ve heard he’s healed others. Why not me? His hem’s dirty anyway so I won’t really make him unclean. Besides, who’ll know?”
Ever had those thoughts? Kind of sneak up on Jesus so he answers before he knows it’s really you asking?
I’ve had those times when I didn’t have much confidence in my own goodness for God to reward. But I’ve been desperate and thought well maybe anyway.
So she takes her shot and Jesus knows instantly healing power went out of him. He stops and says, “Who touched me?”
His disciples answer incredulously, “Uh, Jesus. You’re being jostled around in a crowd.”
He responds, “No, power went out. Who was it?”
At that point I can imagine everyone stopped talking and started backing up until this woman was left standing in front of him by herself.
He says to her, “Don’t be afraid. In fact be encouraged your faith has made you whole.”
And from that day on she was whole.
Sure she was healed physically but even more importantly she could be hugged by her husband and children whom she hadn’t touched for 12 years. She could cook with her closest friend whose house she hadn’t entered in all that time.
Jesus offers that same wholeness to us as well. Not only physical healing but true wholeness.
Wholeness in our relationships.
Wholeness in our spiritual life.
Wholeness in our minds.
Wholeness in bodies.
We can have wholeness that’s far more than health.
How have you experienced that wholeness?
